Overview

We recommend this location for people who want to get off the beaten track and enjoy the natural scenery of the mountains.

Although the house belongs to the village, the countryside starts right outside, starting with the gardens, which have a barbecue area and even a small sauna, then connect directly to the mountainside.

Open a country living magazine and this home may be what you see. Built entirely in stone and oak, it is a lovely, traditional house, where satisfying comfort and high standards go hand in hand with spaciousness. It comes with sizeable private grounds and is a great spot for active or restful vacations.

A large stone-flagged entrance hall leads to a bright, cheerful kitchen whose large internal window onto the dining room creates an intimate yet open plan atmosphere.

The well-furnished living and dining area with its thick wooden floors and inviting open fire place, is cosy and homely. The owner has made sure that nothing is lacking for a full complement of eight guests.

Upstairs are four generously-sized bedrooms, lent character with colourful rugs, large wardrobes, wooden flooring or small sitting/reading areas. Two of the rooms have balconies with views to the beech woods. A double-bedded room also has an inviting loft with a bed for a child.

Abiada (population 88) may be light on services, but there are at least a couple of bar-restaurants, one with a summerhouse dining area, and horseriding is also available: an ideal way to get to know the local mountains.

The endearingly named Alto Campoo area is a high glacial valley home to red and roe deer, chamois, wild boar, birds of prey, even bears and wolves. There are ancient oaks and the walnut tree by the church in nearby Hoz is believed to be the oldest in Spain.

Alto Campoo is well known for ancient relics and remains: the Roman path of Pesquera and the Roman city remains of Julióbriga, the cave church of Valverde, the nearby medieval castle of Argueso, the Iron Age settlements at Aradillos and the megaliths above the village of Mazandrero.

A half hour drive will take you to the forests of Saja-Besaya, to water sports at the Ebro Reservoir, or to the ski resort, which also open in summer for downhill biking, lifts up to the high peaks and treks into areas of natural splendour.

From Santander airport or ferry, the journey to the villa takes one hour. There are good beaches at Santander, too, if you don't mind the drive.

Beautiful location, host very helpful (although we struggled a little with the language barrier!). A lot of great, well marked out walking routes to chose from, swimming pool is great. Great location for the Cantabrian mountains; remote valley location; very beautiful. Booking with Rustical was easy."

Tim | August | 2021

The property was fantastic. The swimming pool was clean and perfectly located. I understand the swimming pool was originally intended for the local community, and it would be my preference for this to remain the case. It is an amazing resource for the local community and I do not think holidaymakers would resent sharing it with the people for which it was intended. We were blessed with amazing weather and would not hesitate to return to this region, even this property! Thank you Rustical for an amazing holiday."

The house and the setting could not have been more lovely. Looking out over the valley whilst eating breakfast and watching the kestrels was really special. The owner was extremely helpful. Would definitely recommend the horse riding in the village and white water rafting on the river Ebro."

Isabella | June | 2016

Lovely house. We found it a spacious, comfortable house with just about everything we needed. (There were 7 adults in our party .) Nice garden too. Mari-Angeles was very welcoming . We really liked the area we were in although we did travel quite a bit around Cantabria quite.A car is essential. We would thoroughly recommend both the house and area. A few I'd our friends are now interesting in visiting the area . The service we received from the company was excellent and the information provided useful. The directions in particular where very easy to follow. To our shame we spoke no Spanish but everyone we met were very tolerant of us. We are now planning to go to Spanish classes in anticipation of a return visit to Cantabria."
