Overview

When we visit Asturias, this is the Rustical Travel cottage of choice for ourselves.

For one, it's so peaceful and comfortable. And then there's the location (just perfect), which allows you to pass effortlessly between the picture book mountain interior and the coast with its sandy beaches.

Here you have all the luxuriousness of a country hotel with a feel of a home. The villa is beautifully kept and has been finished by the owners (who are charming) down to the last detail.

Traditional in its use of stone and timber, the house is spick-and-span and softly furnished from top to bottom.

It accommodates 8 people extremely well. The sitting room is properly provided with sofas and armchairs for all, and the dining areas both inside and outdoors seat eight guests, also.

Similarly, the four bedrooms are all ample.

We think quality sleep is an often overlooked element in the holiday experience and here slumber is a pleasure. The latex mattresses and fine bed linen are first-class, and the only sound we heard was the friendly but distant hoot of the baker’s delivery van bringing fresh bread and croissants in the morning.

There’s a special off-peak price for fewer people that makes it interesting for couples and small families, too.

One of the double bedrooms is downstairs, where it shares the ground floor with the main room, an open plan arrangement combining living and dining areas with the kitchen.

The other three bedrooms are on the upper floor – which is all wood under foot – and have access to a rear garden or to the gallery terrace: a typical element in an Asturias cottage and a lovely place to sit out and enjoy the view.

The accommodation’s high standards are continued in the kitchen, which is very well equipped and maintained. You will sit down to dine on quality china with matching cutlery.

And you have a choice of places to take meals, sit and have drinks, read and relax.

There are living and dining areas indoors, of course, but outside, as you can see in the photography, there are furnished areas upstairs on the gallery balcony, downstairs by the garden, and also a large covered area with a barbecue.

The gardens are lush and green, planted with colourful flowering shrubs, and there are swings and a basketball hoop for children. Apple trees, hazelnut, cherry, walnut, chestnut, peach and fig trees complete the picture. The gardens are not fenced off and partly shared with anyone staying in another cottage nearby.

All around, as you can see, is gorgeous Asturian countryside and the upstairs terrace has views of the valley and mountains.

The house is blissfully quiet but not isolated. There are three or four other houses close by, including the home of the owner, a hospitable lady whose personality and desire to provide the best possible comfort are imprinted on the villa.

She makes sure the house is prettily decorated with plants and don’t be surprised if there’s a baked cake or fresh farm eggs awaiting your arrival. The property belongs to her farmstead and you will see hens and cows around and about.

Above all, this villa is for those who wish to come and enjoy walks through countryside and in the exhilarating Picos de Europa, while also having a choice of some of Northern Spain’s best beaches at an easy drive.

You don’t have to get in the car to go hiking, but the superlative walks (with or without children) are worth driving a few minutes to get to.

There's a wood near the house and a hamlet above following the country lane (and the nearest restaurant is a walkable 1 km), but we recommend taking the car 10 minutes to the path up to Alto de la Tornerilla. Here you have an easy 30-minute walk to a summit with views you won’t forget in a hurry: the snow-covered heights of Picos de Europa to the south; and simply turn round to see the sweeping line of the Dinosaur Coast, with the sea sparkling beyond.

Another 5 minutes and you’re in the mountains themselves – or at the Casaño River, an idyllic destination for a day out.

Head north just a quarter of an hour to the sea and you’ll understand why Asturias is such a special place in Spain. Nowhere else will you find fabulous mountains and beaches so intimately close together.

There's a sandy beach before you reach Llanes fishing village (20 mins) and there are lots more to choose from.

Cottage AT21 is just the place for a natural, relaxing, healthy holiday in northern Spain.

Other than that the limited WiFi signal, we found the property hard to fault. High, reliable standards and a good price, too.

There's central heating if you come out of season and a first basket of firewood for the hearth is thrown in free of charge, also.

For practical needs, there’s a good supermarket 2 km away, as well as a fine restaurant with produce from its own beef farms. There’s also a nearer restaurant with a less inviting décor that provides a take-away service of good home-cooked food. You will find restaurants and day trips described in greater detail in the local guide we send you before you travel.

If you are interested in being initiated into the art and science of birdwatching, a short and particularly bird-rich guided route is often available in the Springtime.

Sallie Rose | October | 2023

The house is very beautiful and spacious, and views from its several balconies are gorgeous. The house is very well built using high quality materials, and it is set in a lovely village. It was clean. Marie is an extremely generous hostess, in helpfulness, time for our questions, and food. The only reason for not rating it excellent is low light in the kitchen: a replacement bulb requiring a high ladder was needed."

This property was the stuff of dreams. Set in the breath-taking hills with cow bells singing and peace and tranquillity. Outside attention was paid to the look of the property and there were colourful flowers everywhere. It was plenty large enough for our family and beautifully furnished with every consideration covered. The outside eating area was perfect for evening meals and we enjoyed using the barbeque and watching the moon rise over the hilltop. The children in our party loved seeing the enormous dog and the chickens at the top of the gardens. There was a mother cat and 2 kittens who were apparently strays and we befriended them and fed them while we were there. I hope future guests will do the same. There was parking immediately outside with space easily for the 4 cars we had between us. There were multiple access points so it was not necessary to carry luggage very far. We would recommend this property to other large family groups. The booking was easy and all our questions were answered in good time."

Remote and peaceful location with quick and easy access to the Pico's and beautiful coastal towns of Llanes and Ribadesella. The property owner actually lives next door so very convenient if you need any help during your stay. She was there to greet us when we arrived with a wonderful homemade cake. The Rustical team made the entire booking process really easy and provided very helpful information on how to find and access the property. The cottage itself was just as amazing as the pictures suggest. Truly idyllic."

The house was beautiful in every way. The location was stunning with views across the mountains. It was so peaceful, the only sound was birds and cowbells. Marie and her husband were so welcoming and friendly and we managed to communicate despite the language barrier. The house was perfectly located for access to the mountains and there were many walks on our doorstep but it was also great for the beaches and exploring the region further. It was a good size and well equipped and had a homely feel to the place. We also really appreciated the tailored list of recommendations for activities, places to visit, walks and restaurants in the nearby area and the detailed directions to the property. Overall I could not find fault with the property and the service from rustical travel, both far exceeded our expectations, we will definitely be returning!"

A lovely property in a beautiful rural location - perfect for a truly tranquil holiday (the dominant sound is cowbells!). Maria Josef were very welcoming and friendly (in spite of us having no common language to converse in) leaving us a delicious cake (too big to finish!) and fresh eggs. The only slight niggle would be that the lighting in the kitchen around the cooker should be improved but, overall, we would thoroughly recommend this property in terms of its proximity to both coast and mountains (making it an ideal base to explore this wonderful part of Spain), and the quality/situation of the accommodation."

Rustical Update

The property manager confirmed that they will look into the kitchen lighting and will improve it.

The property is excellently located for sea and mountains and the views while dining al fresco are wonderful. The helpful owners left some lovely home-made goodies and fresh eggs for our arrival. Everything spotless and house well-equipped (perhaps too much of some items!). Back rooms are slightly damp but not a problem. Thoroughly recommend it for family beach holidays and walking holidays."

Rustical Update

On June 2021 the propoerty managers confirmed that the back bedroom which was sometimes slightly damp, has had an air chamber / new wall built and this problem should now be solved.

We had a really enjoyable holiday through Rustical Travel . The organisation and information throughout , from booking to arrival was excellent . Dealings on line with "Gloria" of R.T. were always friendly helpful and efficient. The property AT21 was very charming and full of Asturian character and interest and the proprietors Mari and Jose could not have been more helpful and kind . A little ability in the Spanish language did prove helpful throughout the holiday . We would recommend Rustical Travel to anyone wishing to holiday in Northern Spain . Our thanks to everyone we dealt with on line and in person."

Susan | September | 2018

Thank you, we had a lovely holiday in the spectacular area of the Asturias. The information and support from the staff at Rustical travel was excellent. Their travel instructions were helpful also the lists of local destinations were extremely useful. I think we must have visited almost everywhere recommended. We found the information accurate except in the cases of the chiringuitos which were no longer there, we travelled in September. The casa was charming and we loved the space it gave us as well as the beautiful views. The casa was well equipped and we did not need to provide any essentials. However, we did struggle with the cooker. Some of the dials didn't work for the hob. Mari-Paz and her husband were most welcoming and anxious that our stay be as happy and comfortable as possible, as indeed it was. We were welcomed by a huge cake, eggs, homemade jams. We had no problems with the parking as there was plenty of space other than the area immediately behind the house."

Rustical Update

The chiringuitos (beach bars) are usually open in July and August. Also, on May 2019 we have been informed that the cooker dials have been replaced recently.

Lindsay | August | 2018

Five of us stayed in this property, and we enjoyed our stay very much. Mari-Paz was welcoming and friendly, and had made us a huge cake! She also gave us eggs, which were delicious. The views across the hillside were beautiful and the sun rose through a light mist in the mornings, very prettily. The location was perfect for visiting both the mountains and the beaches, which were gorgeous. The house was well appointed and it was very good to have all bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, we liked this very much. The kitchen was well-appointed with plenty of plates, glasses, pots, etc, but the units were a bit dated, and the cooker in particular seemed like it could do with replacing. The living room furniture was old fashioned but fit well with the style of the building and added to its charm. The outdoor dining area was perfect for lunchtime meals. Overall a very good place, and with a bit of work on the kitchen it would be perfect."

Rustical Update

The property manager informed us that the cooker is 5 years old, but it works well and is well-kept so, for the moment, it doesn't need to be replaced.

Lovely location. Fantastic views from the property. Well equipped and clean. Very tranquil setting with only the sound of cow bells. Maria very welcoming and friendly. Beautiful furniture throughout. The parking area at the property is located through a very narrow space with walls tight in either side so smaller cars are easier. We made the mistake of following the Sat Nav from Bilbao that took us over a hairy single track mountain road. Follow the travel instructions sent by Rustical. Altogether a lovely restful holiday. Close to some beautiful towns and beeches."

Absolutely wonderful location with stunning views; friendly helpful hosts; very comfortable house; lovely clean bathrooms(!). We'll be very likely to come again. FANTASTIC homemade cake, jam and eggs as a welcoming gift - all delicious Only minor issue would be that the appliances in the kitchen (hob, oven, dishwasher, (stick blender)) were all quite old and we did have to keep fixing - maybe time they were replaced? Also the shower in the upstairs bedroom on the right as you look at the house from outside did leak through to the kitchen despite us being sure the water was not coming out of the shower compartment. Marie is aware of this; but we didn't mention the other items, partly language barrier, partly we sorted them sufficiently for our stay and didn't want to fuss as nothing could have been done at the time. Also to note the police were issuing fines for cars which went through no entry signs at local beaches - best to use the designated car parks! Finally the team at Rustical Travel have been really helpful, with excellent notes on local area and first-class direction instructions. Huge Thank You!"

Rustical Update

We have informed the property manager about the kitchen appliances so she can examine them to check if anything needs to be replaced.

We found the house absolutely delightful, it was excellent and very well appointed, lovely every bedroom was en suite, however the shower in the twin bedroom did seem to leak somewhere which appeared in the dining area, we did not get a chance to explain to the charming couple who were our hosts. They were simply marvelous and gave us cakes and eggs and their garden was so beautiful, being a gardener myself I know how much hard work went into it. The area is stunning, lovely views from the house and great to wake up to the sound of cow bells, the beaches nearby great and so unspoilt but plenty to do, great walks and cycling in the Picos de Europa. Lovely places nearby to eat and markets to buy local produce, altogether a perfect place for family holidays."

Rustical Update

We have informed the property manager about the shower in the twin bedroom and they are already aware of it. They said they will inform future clients how to proceed when using that shower to prevent further problems with it.

We had a wonderful week at this property in early July. It is perfectly positioned for very easy access to both the Picos and the many amazing beaches on this stretch of coast. Marie and Jose, who live next door, were very welcoming and helpful even though our Spanish was incredibly basic. The house itself is beautiful and very well equipped. We didn't need to buy any household basics all week (loo rolls, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets etc) as they were all supplied. Note that wi-fi was better than expected, we seemed to get coverage throughout the house. The garden, whilst lovely, isn't as large as some of the photos make it seem. If you have small children with plenty of energy then this may not be the best property for you. Also it's worth noting that to get to the property's parking area at the rear of the property involves driving up a narrow, uphill path between two buildings. We managed it OK all week but it gave us a few hairy moments in an unfamiliar hire car. The local area was stunning and peaceful and the property was exactly as described by Rustical Travel. The information that they provided was good and helpful and they were able to help us out with a few requests. We're definitely planning to return to the area and would book with RT again."

Excellent amenities, stunning location and lovely owners!!! We were welcomed with a home made cake ( which lasted a week, was that big!) fresh eggs from their free range chickens and home made jam, which we cheekily asked for more, it was that good! The main highlight was hanging out a bread bag every night with 1euro in it and finding a fresh stick of bread in the bag the following morning. Beaches were good and easy to get to. Your info pack was very well put together. A very good holiday, thanks."

Dear Rustical Travel, It is all too easy, after returning home from your holidays, to be so occupied with normal life that feedback is forgotten. So I am glad that you prompted me! From my first enquiry, until now, your communication has been EXCELLENT! Your directions to the property, and local information, was THE BEST OF ITS KIND WE HAVE SEEN. And by the way, my wife and I run a holiday cottage business in Cornwall, so we know a good thing when we see one. Congratulations to the Rustical Travel team for delivering such high standards. For independent travellers like ourselves you unhesitatingly deserve our highest praise. Oh yes, and cottage was fantastic too! And the hosts so charming! We had no Spanish, and they no English. So we spoke European."

Rustical Travel's handling of our booking was exemplary. The property is an easy drive from the port at Santander with the instructions for finding the property very clear. We were most impressed by the quality of Spanish rural roads. The cottage is as described on the website - very well equipped with friendly, helpful owners living nearby; cake on arrival and fresh eggs later in the week. Wifi has obviously been upgraded as we had no reception problems inside the house. Beautiful, peaceful surroundings with tinkling cow bells but with many beaches and cliff top walks a short drive away. A similar short drive inland leads to the Picos mountains which provide easy walking trails giving a close-up view of the peaks."

The house was in a lovely setting and a great base for exploring the area. We enjoyed some days hiking in the mountains and others enjoying the gorgeous beaches of Asturias. The house was a lovely 4 bedroom house with well stocked kitchen. The owners live on site (seperate building) and could not have been nicer. We didn't find English to be widely spoken in Asuturias which made it more of an authentic experience than other regions of Spain. There are a lot of options for things to do that would satisfy almost everyone and the local guide provided by Rustical Travel was probably the best local off the beaten path guide I have ever received from a region and it was exactly what we were looking for. The people in Asturia are very nice and accomodating and I would not hesitate to go back."
