Overview

Professionally run and very nicely located, this a villa that has plenty to give in terms of quality, being traditional in appearance but more modern in facilities.

You’ll see that it’s just inland from the La Franca: the Blue Flag beach that we rate in our guide as one of the ten best beaches in Asturias. And another of them, El Regolgueru, is on the next inlet and accessible from La Franca by walking round at low tide.

The villa backs onto the coastal range of the Cantabrian mountains and here in the Sierra de Cuera walkers will be in their element. To the “Route of Colours” circular walk, add the hike to the summit of Pico Paisano, and the route of blowholes along the coast itself.

Nearby is the road into the Picos de Europa: in 45 minutes you can be at the hub in Potes.

You have broadband WiFi to investigate and plan days out as you go along.

While the villa is offered for private self-catering holidays, it has something of a hotel-like character, well set-up with a fully equipped, semi-industrial kitchen and very neatly kept. Also, bedrooms tend to be similar and of an equivalently high standard, each with its own en suite bathroom (including hairdryer).

Walkers, in particular, will be keen to know that the mattresses (we tested them) are firm and comfy. They’re a broad 1.50 metres wide (doubles) and 1.05 metres (singles).

There are in fact more bedrooms than you need for a group of nine people and we just make the five best available, all situated on the first floor. Two of these rooms have access to the long balcony that runs along the front of the villa.

We don’t offer the villa for than nine guests as the sitting and dining arrangements are comfortable for that number, but no more. You can dine indoors or out. There’s a brick-built barbecue in the garden, where a table and chairs can be set up.

Children will be interested to learn that the garden is big and there are swings and a see-saw, too.

The setting is a rather quiet country lane from which the house is set back. Just down the road you have a typical Asturian sidrería, or cider house that also serves food, and a very good restaurant.

There’s a small supermarket you can walk to – and well-known walking excursions out into countryside and hills start close by, too.

The Route of Colours is a 12-km circular walk that starts and ends in nearby Tresgrandas and passes through hamlets connected by the “Dark Valley,” whose name originates in the once complete forest canopy, that sunlight barely penetrated.

Within no more than half an hour’s drive you have practical facilities and some of the highlights of Asturias:

Colombres, with the Indiana Houses and museum, is just 4 km away

Unquera, for all your shopping needs and more restaurants, is 10 mins

San Vicente de Barquera, attractive old beach town with a view to the Picos de Europa is 20 mins

Llanes, the most popular coastal destination in the area, is 25 mins

The Soplao Caves and their astonishing galleries of stalagtites and stalagmites are 40 mins

Even more than these, the most obvious attractions are also the closest: natural, sandy beaches. These are so much more pleasant than in the built-up costas elsewhere in Spain. La Franca, which has lifeguards and a beach bar-restaurant in the summer, extends round not only to El Regolgueru, but also to Playa del Oso (Bear Beach). A short drive from these is another beauty at Buelna.

Along the local coastline at Vidiago you’ll find the curious phenomenon of blow holes (bufones in Spanish). Holes formed in the limestone cliffs have created spouts for the sea, and when the waves are strong, they expel air though these in powerful booms and whistles.

Discovering Picos de Europa is also possible from here, the famed Cares defile walk, the Covadonga lakes and the wonderful mountain landscapes of La Liébana.

Mary | July | 2022

The property was well located. The manager Carmen was amazing, she really went the extra mile and made our holiday the lovely relaxing experience that we had hoped for. The property itself would be even better if the garden were enclosed and private, there was permanent and comfortable outdoor furniture, the bathrooms and kitchen were replaced ( they were tired and in need of an update) and the cot was undamaged and up to the latest safety standards."
