The last leg of steps (about 5 steps) down to the lower level don´t have railings so there is a drop of about 1 metre high, so small children and toddlers should be supervised.

Overview

Roman pathways, roaming wolves, and a river for wild swimming – we have found an enchanting spot for families off the beaten track in Northern Spain.

This traditional stone cottage was once a dilapidated guest house, until a local couple with an eye for design brought it lovingly back to life in 2018. What first ensnared their imagination wasn’t only the house, but the sweet natural spot on which it sat. After our visit, we have to agree.

Perched on the edge of a tiny village, the pristine countryside of forested hills rolls out in front of you.

Despite being only a couple minutes stroll to the heart of the village, the level of privacy is almost complete, and during our stay we didn’t see any signs of another property being able to peek onto you.

As you step into the centre of the village you may feel as you have tumbled into the pages of a medieval history book. The granite square, the natural flowing spring, and the ancient granaries on stone pillars bring a bygone era back to life.

The village home feels more like a country escape - four different levels and wooden steps lead the way to boutique style double bedrooms.

There are 6 double bedrooms in total, all boasting ensuite bathrooms, thick walls, and good mattresses - which we believe are the essential ingredients for a good night’s sleep. Although it has 6 bedrooms in total we think this house has plenty of space for up to 10 people to stretch out in style.

As dining is such an essential element in Spanish culture; guests at this Galician home can pick from three options:

A formal dining area invites elegant suppers with the whole group, an indoor barbeque area in traditional Galician style keeps things casual with space for drinking and card games late into the night, and the shaded pergola ensures that al fresco lunches aren’t over in a hurry. While not huge, the garden is well-maintained and enclosed – making it a great space for children to run wild.

Beyond the borders of the house and you enter a fairytale world of virginal woodlands where wild wolves are said to stay hidden out of sight.

Meander down the ancient roman pathways that lead to the river where the brave can jump right in for a swim. Those who want to cool down in a dedicated spot can head to the nearby summer river beach at Cerceda only five minutes away.

Active travellers will find a plethora of walks right on their doorstep – follow the trail to the abandoned village of Viascon, wander to remote chapels, and take respite in the authentic eateries along the way.

History buffs should also be sure to visit Pontevedra only 30 minutes’ drive, where tapas and wine can be devoured in the shadow of gothic architecture.

Day trips to the beach will keep the whole family in saltwater bliss on the sands of Marin just over 30 minutes away.
