Overview

We recommend this cottage for being both rustically enchanting and also very well situated in La Garrotxa. If you want to get to know this exceptional area of northern Catalonia near the Pyrenees, and like genuine country décor, this might well be the place for you.

It also comes with an independent casita, more or less an extra little studio cottage in itself, that gives you a third bedroom at no additional cost.

We liked this old house, full of character (complete with the occasional creaky floorboard), presented in traditional local style. It's ideal for enjoying the many-splendoured options of La Garrotxa from a home base of perfect peace and quiet.

You really feel secluded here by the forest, surrounded by gardens that blend into profuse natural woods of beech and oak. Secluded but not isolated: you have (fairly reliable) WiFi Internet for investigating the area and keeping in touch with home. There is another house in the same estate, not far, but well distanced.

There are excellent restaurants nearby if you prefer to eat out (much cheaper than their coastal equivalents, a previous holidaymaker here told us).

In 2018, this property is under new management and is now owned by the reputed RCR Arquitectes company.

Although visitors to this rich, once volcanic region of Girona will invariably want to get out and about and walk the hills, explore down the lanes, or immerse themselves in history, driving around to the medieval villages, heading to Dali’s castle museum in Figueres, or beautiful coastal Cadaqués and the first class beaches at Emporda, the cottage’s location represents a delightful opportunity to relax on lazy days off.

The property is reached down a slightly idyllic driveway which opens to plenty of privacy within large gardens. A wooden bridge crosses a stream. There's a pool of mountain water (for natural swims) and deeply serene hillside all around.

The cottage is built on three floors with two entrances from ground and lower ground levels. There are two spacious double bedrooms and all the facilities you need for rural holiday comfort.

The main entrance leads directly into a lovely rustic kitchen and living quarters: a stone-walled, wood-beamed living and dining room. It accommodates four people comfortably and extra chairs can be provided to allow everyone to eat together if one or more of you is staying in the casita bedroom.

The living area feels very cosy, the thick original wood floor, decorative prints and soft illumination all elements of the vintage character of the accommodation.

The lower ground floor can be accessed from an internal staircase or its own garden entrance. It comprises a double bedroom converted from a mill room and a state-of-the-art shower room: the stone and wood of one century are juxtaposed with the chrome and electronics of another. The shower wall is one large window onto the forest (totally private, we assure you!). The bedroom floor is of smooth terracotta and there’s a two-seater sofa.

Up a steepish staircase from the living room is another double bedroom, also wood-floored.

The casita – a detached annexe constructed from the same local stone – provides the option of an additional double bedroom and bathroom, at no additional charge. It has a furnished porch looking out onto the garden and its own simple kitchenette.

While the accommodation is very satisfactory, it’s the impressive natural surroundings that dominate here and time spent outdoors. Although it’s difficult to convey in the photographs, this is no leafy suburbia but a terrific area of forest and hills and streams, one of which feeds the alberca pool outside: this is well looked after and has proven to be very popular with guests.

What else is of interest here?

• For eating in, local shops including a top notch butcher’s.
• For meals out, there are restaurants ranging from the highest quality to very good set meal establishments (with children’s meals also).
• The fabulous old villages of Santa Pau (hot air balloon rides available), Sant Joan de les Abadesses; Besalu (town with a medieval centre).
• Olot town (for museums and bicycle hire).
• Hike up to St Michael's Mount.
• Tour and hike the extinct volcanoes of La Garrotxa, now furred with forest.
• Visit the unique beech forest here of Fageda Jorda and follow signposted walks.
• Discover waterfalls and opportunities for wild swimming and the beautiful scenery of the high Pyrenees mountains.
• Excursions further afield will take you to Salvador Dali’s home town of Figueres and the castle museum dedicated to him, or to the splendid beaches of Emporda.

Dirk | July | 2023

Location and surroundings are dream-like. Interiors are, indeed, very ‘rustic’, but that’s what one is looking for through this site, obviously. The horses were a nice touch, but also the real wildlife such as squirrels, bats at dusk and musical toads at night ? Some comfortable outdoor seating would have been nice, luckily we brought some folding chairs. Silvia, the host, is absolutely great. We truly had a fabulous week."

Absolutely beautiful place. The pool makes it! The location, the horses, the houses themselves are beautiful. Lots to see in the surrounding area though you certainly need a car. Silvia , who looks after the house, and as really helpful. The interior of the house is historic. In the main The house is comfortable unfortunately the kitchen is really basic to be honest the cooker was past it. The house could also do with some outside chairs. Such a special place though."

We had a lovely time at Garrotxa, and were made very welcome by our hosts, who were delightful. A charming summer house, an old water mill, surrounded by wooded hills and with plenty to see. The rooms were tastefully decorated and we were very grateful for the mosquito netting over the windows. We swam in the mill pond every day, which was very in keeping with the property. In a constructive way, I hope, I offer three observations. We were fortunate to be staying at the mill when it was hot, both during the day and at night. Because the master bedroom is immediately beneath the roof, it was roasting hot at night and quite uncomfortable. Our hosts gave us a fan for our last couple of days and that made a significant difference to our comfort. I mentioned the mill pond, which we swam in - well, it would have been useful to have had a pool net to remove leaves etc We didn't mind that much but not everyone will feel the same. Finally, the cook extractor fan and cupboard are so low, it is difficult to stand over the cook when preparing a meal. It's not a big deal, but that's the feedback. We had a lovely time and really appreciated the warmth of our welcome."

The accommodation was excellent, everything was as described on your website and we really enjoyed our stay. The area was good and we found lots of interesting things to do. The only feedback which I would offer which might be of benefit to future guests is that it would be helpful to have more information about things to do in the area. Maybe a visitors book where people could leave information about places to eat etc. We discovered a number of good restaurants, went hot air ballooning and found wild swimming within a few miles of the property. Please don't take this feedback as a criticism, just information which we hope will be useful. The service we received from Rustical Travel was efficient, professional and courteous throughout. We would certainly use you again and have already recommended you to a number of friends."

I had every intention of contacting you with comments on the villa CA26. Our 3 wk. vacation on Spain just came to an end and we absolutely loved this most beautiful villa. I personally wished we stayed longer. The whole family felt very warm and comfortable. Please give our best regards to Anna and Joaquim- very nice people!"

Just to say thanks for a great holiday. Anna and Joaquim were helpful and friendly and we were delighted to find that the house was just as beautiful as adverised! The fresh water pool is probably a bit cold for people from Mediterranean countries, but it was fine for us. We loved the house and the area and had a fantastic time."

The property is gorgeously situated and my family (with 2 young daughters 9 and 7 years old) had a spectacular time. It was a perfect vacation. Although quietly situated (and a slight trek out), there are many towns (large and little, including major sites) that are within easy reach by driving. In terms of its position in the country side, the property is divine! It is extremely spacious. The owners are extremely sweet who took great personal care of us. I would recommend this property, without question, for those looking for an off the beaten track holiday."

Another lovely trip from Rustical Travel! The property was in a very tranquil and secluded location, yet the owners Ana & Joaquim were only a walk away if we needed anything. The mill and the casita were very traditional but comfortable and the setting and pools were idyllic. My two teenage boys loved it - despite the lack of sun and some rain, it was great to spend so much time outdoors.... We ate out in the evenings and found plenty of local food - beware though that mainly Catalan is spoken in this area, so ordinary Spanish was sometimes not understood! There were no English tourists whatsoever - heaven! My younger son had a particularly good trip, as his dream came true - Joaquim owns an old American military Jeep and he kindly let my husband drive it round the farm with the boys. It made his holiday! I would definitely recommend this property - it was a big shame that the weather was not good for us - I understand that normally at this time of year it is hot and sunny. We would love to return to this area! Thanks for our third trip with Rustical Travel - we are still impressed with you all!"

We really enjoyed our stay in the "molina". A great setting for a family holiday, wonderful natural pool, pick your veg and fruit in the garden and lots of interesting excursions from this base into pyrenees, volcanic region, Olot, Banyoles etc. It was a nice change from spending another week at the beach - and the restuarants were superb and less than half cost of costal equivalents. The children enjoyed discovering toads, fish, horses, lizards etc and loved the family dogs."
