Overview

Situated by a running river, this very rustic self-catering rental cottage was built on the site of the bakery for one of the old water mills in the pretty green valley.

Ideal for people who want that get-back-to-nature experience but without roughing it, it’s just a few minutes from Grazalema village in the heart of the Natural Park of the same name.

You arrive at a wooded setting in the Natural Parkland and leave the car in a very quiet spot a very short walk from the house, along a path and a little bridge over the river. This is not the most practical entrance with suitcases, but it is very magical!

You’re in a leafy gully surrounded by trees and right next to a small river that tumbles in small waterfalls to form a plunge pool deep and wide enough to swim around in.

Inside, the accommodation is simple and rustic, but quite comfortable and adequately equipped.

The living room has a grand old cast iron stove and the house comes with gas heaters and even electric blankets for colder months.

There’s a simple but properly equipped kitchen and a dining room set up to seat five people comfortably and which overlooks the cascading river.

There are three bedrooms. Bedroom 1 is accessed via screened walkway and is built on an adjacent rock. It’s a simple affair with a wood ceiling and access to a private wood deck with a couple of chairs.

From May to October your focus will be on outdoor living here. There’s another timber deck out the front with a couple of sunbeds and the sounds are of the river and blackbirds and even nightingales singing.

The river and location are virtually if not completely private. The millhouse itself, some metres to the rear of the property, has also been converted for holiday stays but it has its own entrance and is screened off by vegetation, so that one doesn’t feel that privacy is too compromised.

Dips in the fresh (cold!) water of the river plunge pool are recommended, as is simply sitting on one of the large rocks, reading or meditating...

Older children and teenagers will love the chance to explore the lovely natural surroundings, especially for longer hikes. We don’t offer the property to families with very small children since apart from the river, there are quite a lot of steps and places with drops.

Above all, this is a great place to disconnect, with marvellous opportunities to go rambling in the Natural Park, visit the caves and enjoy the beautiful old Ronda Mountains village of Grazalema, with its restaurants and bars and home-made spa facility.

YOUR REVIEWS

Nicola | August | 2022

A great location and really enjoyed the typical rustic Spanish feel of this property. The natural plunge pool was great and been surrounded by wildlife. The property clean inside which is important although some of the windows had become cobwebby and overgrown greenery and some of the decking had started to become unstable and may need to be looked at and shutters and doors had gaps which meant we were bitten a lot at night. We had a great time though, gorgeous location and enjoyed being back to nature."

The house is beautifully situated and equipped with every comfort. Both inside (good beds, fine kitchen) and outside (terraces, green area) the stay was very pleasant. The house is also ideal for excursions. We only have praise for Rustic Travel; it was the best booking agency we ever dealt with."

We loved our stay at RD22. Everything we needed was there and the owner met us to show us around the property. The information sent by Rustical Travel was excellent, especially the photos of the roads we needed to use to find the property. A fantastic location with dappled sunlight and you could choose the appropriate terrace depending on your desire for sun or shade. I'd highly recommend this property."

Lovely place to stay for peace and quite, plenty of places to go for walks, and interesting little villages to call into for food or drinks. Lovely falling asleep and waking to the stream. Idea for a complete get away holiday. One criticism, kitchen poorly equipped."

Rustical Update

In early 2016 we send property manager a full list of neccesary kitchen equipment. On previous reviews it was mentioned that kitchen was well equipped so, we will visit and inspect ourselves when we are back in the area.

What a wonderful place. Lived up to and exceeded ALL our expectations. The rooms were comfortable; the kitchen well equipped; the terrace superb; the sound of running water relaxing; and the birdsong and wildlife were amazing. We liked Grazelema for the range of shops and helpful people. It had all we needed from watch batteries to replacement sunglasses (the farmacia, also the market but those cheap ones broke within 3 days) and of course food and wine. With 3 smallish supermarkets we found everything we needed and more, with Coviran being best by far for fruit and veg. We had a walk with Sue Eastock and it was well worth the reasonable price. We'd have missed much of the wildlife without it and she told us about the area as well. The limestone scenery above Grazelema is superb and the walking not too taxing after the first steep ascent, though it is uneven and needs good walking shoes/boots. Slight drawback - the plunge pool didn't look clean so I didn't risk swimming. I may have been overcautious but didn't want to risk a holiday bug."

We had a lovely holiday. Friendly greeting on arrival. The cottage is in a very lovely setting next to the stream and our 3 children enjoyed exploring all around looking for wildlife. We really enjoyed the setting and the area. Grazalema was a perfect location for us in the country. We ate out to lots of good local restaurants."
