Overview

Located right on the outskirts of picturesque Gaucin, the location of this holiday home is truly privileged.

A short 5 minute walk takes you to this lively village with plenty of good restaurants and shops, yet your accommodation is still in the countryside, privately surrounded by nature and unspoilt views.

Thus, you´ll benefit from the best of both worlds: meals and shopping a stone throws away and lovely peace and quiet exactly where you want it.

The house in itself is cheerful, and the layout is very attractive with plenty of light flooding into the house through its large window panes.

Several partly shaded terraces invite you to bask under the sun or relax under the cooler shade, all while enjoying the infinite views. On clear days you can see as far as Morocco and Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea is easily seen 20 kilometres away further south.

The furnished pergola next to the pool that looks out to the breathtaking scenery is certainly a highlight of this property.

The facilities overall are good as well. The bright, ample kitchen invites you to cook and the outside pergola is not too far from the kitchen, easy and at hand for al fresco meals.

Both bedrooms have their own en suite facilities, and doors that grant direct access to the outdoor terraces. The downstairs bedroom is king sized but can be made as twin bedded for children on previous request.

Although there are no air-conditioning units, the house is well insulated and benefits from local sea breezes. There are also fans available to help during those hottest days.

In colder months, you´ll be pleased with the under floor heating throughout, except in the TV room which warms up thanks to the pipe that rises from the fireplace and a radiator. No matter the season, this property has the right elements to be enjoyed any time of the year.

Suited for 4 guests, it is perfect for couples with children that are not very young. Due to some drops next to the stairs both indoors and outdoors, children below the age of 8 are not allowed to stay. Babies under the age of 1 who still do not walk or crawl are welcome though!

The owners of the property sometimes stay in a little casita nearby, a couple of minutes walk away. They are far enough though, and your privacy is always respected. Our team felt a sense of being in a proper country home with well-deserved intimacy.

Guests who enjoy going for walks will be happy to discover that directly below the pool, where the rock garden is, a gate opens to a local pathway which goes far away through forests.

What an exciting place for holidays without having to drive out to enjoy the surroundings!

And when you´re in the mood for exploring what lies further ahead, the historical town of Ronda is beautiful and only a 45 minute drive away. The seaside, with lovely fish bars is even closer - it takes 30 to 35 minutes to reach the Mediterranean coast!

YOUR REVIEWS

Bob | September | 2024

Excellent location. Very well equipped and spacious accommodation. Very easy access to Gaucin. Great swimming pool. Property well maintained. Fantastic views across the valley to Caseres, the coast, Gibraltar and North Africa. Great wildlife - vultures, oryx and even a local fox who came to visit."

Stephen | August | 2024

Outstanding views and peaceful location. Owner stays in adjacent villa and called in regularly which some people might find off putting. Villa generally in good condition but could benefit from professional cleaning at the end of each tenancy rather than the owner having a wipe around. Gardens weren't swept from autumn leaf fall which wasa shame as they could have been quite pleasant areas to relax in. Overall, we were pleased with the location and accommodation but small improvements could have enhanced our rating."

Rustical Update

Following this review, we spoke with the owner who provided the following clarification:

House cleaning: The property receives a thorough cleaning between guests (approximately 6 man-hours). For stays of two weeks, a mid-stay clean is performed (about 3 man-hours), which includes a full linen change, bathroom cleaning, and general tidying, although not as detailed as the initial clean.

Garden maintenance: The garden is tidied between guest stays. However, due to the current drought conditions and limited water usage, leaves may accumulate during a stay. This does not prevent guests from enjoying the outdoor areas.

Owner visits: The owner visits once a week to water the plants and checks the pool daily. They are happy to adjust the frequency of interactions based on guest preferences to ensure privacy or provide assistance when needed.

The owner also highlighted that many guests return to this property, appreciating not only the service they receive but also the property's unique charm and peaceful location.

If you are looking for a place to really get away from it all then this is perfect. The house and grounds are deceptively large and very secluded while Gaucin itself is quiet but also well equipped for eating out or in. Our host was excellent and was on hand for advice before and during our stay."

Views are amazing, better than photos as can’t do position and house justice. Owners very helpful. House beautiful - could benefit with air con upstairs when very hot but otherwise house and owners cater for everything you could possibly need. Village easy walk and lovely restaurants. Castle another great vantage point and beautiful. You will never stop being impressed by views right down to Gibraltar and Africa from all aspects of house. Great holiday."

Idyllic location, comfortable and extremely well-equipped villa, and a short walk from a beautiful village. The perfect place to retreat and relax. Wish we could have stayed longer and we definitely will return. Our hosts, Jonas and Elizabeth, could not have been more welcoming and were the “icing on the cake” of our latest visit to Gaucín. Be warned, you will leave a little piece of your heart in this village and repeat visits are inevitable!"

The location is stunning. The views are amazing. You are never bored as the view is ever changing. The couple who own and manage the house are warm and welcoming. If you want a do nothing break this is the place. After a busy seven days touring the house and location hit the spot. Things to consider. The are flights of steps all over the house and grounds. There were no night lights so getting up in the night to visit the bathroom or kitchen was tricky. The lower bedroom bed has no headboard so sitting up in bed was not possible. Something we like to do. The pool is very deep so you cannot stand and take in the view. It is a five star location along with owners, being an older couple it fell short in a few areas."

We had a wonderful stay at El Refugio! The property was well equipped and the location was second to none.
