Overview

Just outside Jabugo, a village known for producing one of the best Iberian hams in the world, you will find this impeccably restored old mill. Although a short distance away from the village, you are actually only surrounded by wild nature and the unspoilt view of green wooded hills goes as far as the eye can see. As soon as you arrive, you realize that this quiet and picturesque spot is simply an idyllic place for your holidays.

What was once a 19th century mill has now been completely renovated to a high standard, using the finest local materials. Indoors, the decor is simple yet unique, combining details from different parts of the world: copperware from Pakistan; some of the pictures and wooden articles from Australia and India; carpets come from South America, Africa and Asia; lamp shades and pottery from Morocco... all harmoniously presented in a smart balance.

It also boasts one of the best country kitchens we have ever come across, exceptionally spacious and well equipped. The breakfast bar is just perfect and the dining table conveniently placed next to the kitchen makes it an ideal place for socializing. This spacious open-plan area, with large windows facing the beautiful views, is where you are likely to spend a lot of your time with family and friends, especially if you are keen cooks!

While for those who prefer to relax without having to think about meal preps, catering services may usually be arranged in advance and prices are affordable.

The house itself has an unusual floor plan, mainly split on three different levels. After our visit we named each level: upper ground floor, ground floor and lower level.

In early 2022 a new proper 12 metre long swimming pool was built below the house, it really is a wonderful spot which has also been made safe for children thanks to a fence and a gate.

Access to the house is via a track that first reaches the upper ground floor, named as such since you can park the car at the back of the house and access this level directly (to kitchen/dining area, living room and two bedrooms). This access is easy and convenient, particularly when you need to carry your shopping or discharge your luggage from the car.

The track continues downhill towards the bottom of the property where you´ll come across another parking space (closed garage). From there, the main entrance to the house is accessed by a ramped footpath with flower beds and beautiful old stone. Just next to this ground floor entrance, you will find a furnished terrace and some gardens with the pool.

A 3rd bedroom is found on this ground floor, and a different back door opens up to another furnished terrace with a large table for outdoor meals.

And finally, the 4th bedroom is on the lower level just below the ground floor, yet mind you, it does not miss out on views! This bedroom has ensuite facilities and is best for party members who wish to have their own independent space.

If you are planning on travelling off-season, this property is suitable year round. In winter the under floor heating, with thermostats in each room, can make the house feel comfortably cosy, while in summer the thick walls and the surrounding forest usually help to maintain a pleasantly cool temperature inside.

Although at first the house may seem to have been thought out for adults only, the grounds are actually exciting for children too; the shallow pool is especially great for the youngest ones.

Despite Jabugo village being so close by, the walk over there is relatively unpractical if you plan to go by foot on a regular basis. The track from the house is not long but somewhat steep (which means the way there is not as easy as the return home), and although it takes less than 10 minutes to get to the actual village, it does take a little longer to reach most bars and shops, yet it is still perfectly doable by foot.

And if you appreciate proper Iberian ham which is free-range, acorn-fed and air-cured then you´ll be in paradise here. Jabugo ham, particularly its black foot variety, is possibly the highest regarded jamon anywhere. People come from every part of the globe just to purchase it. But if you are more into veggies, no worries! There are also very good markets and shops and Aracena town has good shopping facilities.

You are also on the western side of the Aracena Natural Park, which means you benefit from being close to some great attractions: the amazing 10th century mosque in Almonaster la Real is a relic and the Rio Tinto mining zone is quite extraordinary for outdoor sightseeing. These western areas of Aracena are also remarkably unspoilt in terms of natural preservation.

But if you wish to go beyond this beautiful land of pretty local villages and nature, suggestions for days out include: Portugal only 45 minutes away by car and vibrant Seville less than a 1hr and 30 minutes.

It was our second visit to the old mill. It is a very spacious property. There were 9 of us. Each bedroom is en-suite apart from one where the shower room is just a few paces down the corridor. There are a lot of steps as the villa is on a number of levels but we have got used to this. The pool is a long way below the villa. This means anyone not going down to the pool is a little left out. The plus is you do feel away from everything at the pool. This year a path had been built down the hill to the pool. While better it was very loose and you had to be careful. A more stable surface would be better. The villa is very well equipped. We like the location - it is very quiet. The towns of Jabugo, Aracena, Almonaster la Real, Cortegana and Fuenteheridos have good restaurants and are not far. Lola is lovely and very helpful. Overall we would highly recommend the villa."

This property is a converted olive oil mill. Beautiful, spacious and luxurious on many different levels! The setting is lovely with extensive views across olives groves and cork oak trees. Great for nature and with local hiking right on the doorstep. The Old Mill is very well equipped including items for babies and young children. Visitors should be aware that the property may not be suitable for those who are not ‘fleet of foot’ due to the many flights of stone steps and the distance between house and pool. Our family had a truly enjoyable and memorable holiday and would certainly consider another stay in the future."

Thank you very much for letting us rent this beautifully restored and renovated mill. It’s now a fantastic luxurious villa with everything that we needed for an excellent holiday. The location is superb. It’s only about 15 mins walk from the town center but still in a very quiet and secluded area in the nature park. We’ve seen the black pigs but also storks and vultures close to the villa. We’ve been around to the small villages, lunch in Portugal, seen caves, been on the Rio Tinto mining train and seen the mines. Joined the festival with the locals and been on the ham and wine guided tour in town. We’ve loved it all. However, we enjoyed even more the times in and around the pool or eating our own foods by one of the beautiful dining tables inside or out, prepared in the extremely well-equipped kitchen. The kitchen is fantastic and really made for cooking – at the same time big enough to have the whole family present - either helping or just keeping company and enjoying a drink. There were 8 of us (two families) and we had ample space with the villa’s 5 bedrooms (4 double and 1 single). All the bedrooms have own bathroom. The support by the owner, Nick, and the local support by Lola, was perfect. They were always ready to answer our questions and very helpful with any queries we might have. Everything in the villa was high quality, making the holiday very relaxing but also aesthetically pleasing for the eyes and soul. We can highly recommend renting this beautiful property through Rustical Travel."

Christopher | July | 2022

The location is excellent - close to Jabugo and yet on its own with great views. The area (Jabugo, Cortegana, Aracena etc) is very interesting and authentic. Food in the restaurants is a little samey and would not work for someone who does not like pork! The villa is very well built and equipped and it is huge. The main drawback is the stairs. With bedrooms on different levels, mainly below the kitchen, the climb can be long. The pool is superb but again the climb (80m uphill) is not easy in August heat. I know the pool was recently put in but a path would be nice as the loose dirt on the present track is not safe. A loo down by the pool would be a welcome addition. The terrace is small and the view is obscured, when sitting down, by the high wall. I have just concentrated on some minor negatives. I have already rebooked for next year. It is a lovely place and the owner clearly looks after the villa beautifully."

We were extremely impressed by Rustical Travel's efficient administration and professionalism. Our house manager was exceptional, extremely friendly and helpful and kept us appropriately informed of all necessary maintenance eg.pool cleaning, without being intrusive. The house itself provided the quintessentially perfect luxury Spanish getaway. Spectacular views from every terrace, extremely well equipped, fabulously spacious with well designed decorative details in every room. It really is a very special place."
