Overview

The shepherd and his sheep have moved on to pastures new, but his stone-and-wood home remains and has been newly restored to make a charming hideaway in the Cantabria hills.

With Santander and beaches just half an hour away, it’s conveniently situated and it’s also relaxingly private. The views you look out onto are of pure, rolling countryside and forest.

It has a garden barbecue and arboretum in the 5,000 m² of private grounds.

The once humble cottage has been completely and aptly restored in all its rusticity to become a warm and welcoming self-catering holiday home.

The property is easily reached at the end of a paved track. You step out of the car to blissfully peaceful natural surroundings and a lawned garden. You’re on your own here: it really is quite enchanting.

The downstairs entrance is to a reception area and the two double bedrooms. As one of the bedrooms is only curtained off, we offer the house for one couple only, with or without children.

Slightly steep stairs fashioned from hewn tree trunks go up to the living accommodation. This is one large open-plan space divided, into sitting and dining areas and kitchen.

It all feels thoroughly traditional. Chunky, polished wood and thick terracotta tiling lend an air of reassuring sturdiness to the place. The kitchen comes properly equipped in country style and for special roasts you have a large wood-fired barbecue in the garden.

This is one of our villas and cottages in Northern Spain that we offer for winter lets.

There’s central heating supplemented by a glass-fronted log fire and the house stays nice and warm.

Overall, we found it just right for a couple who wants to be away from it all for a week or so.

The shepherd’s cottage is not about luxurious and electronic mod cons. Even the TV and DVD have the impression of being added as an afterthought: you climb up to a cushioned gallery to watch TV here.

Internet is not installed, although there is some 4G cover here. Otherwise, 10 minutes from the cottage, on the way to the coast, there’s WiFi at some local bars.

It’s the outside world that will wow you here. A balcony terrace gives you a huge view of unspoilt Cantabria countryside, field and forest. We’re very particular at Rustical Travel about the attractiveness of the locality and here we rated high.

Starting at the house and garden itself, and simple furniture for sitting out – and not forgetting the independent barbecue porch – you have an arboretum planted with beech, maple, chestnut, sweet gum, linden, oak, ash and magnolia.

You can pass out of the private grounds and explore the hilly countryside.

The land borders the Pasiego Valley, a green paradise of cabins, dairy farming, dry stone walls, blue-eyed inhabitants, and above all, a landscape of hill and valley where you can roam to your heart’s content.

Half an hour away you have the equally satisfying Ason river valley, beaches, and Santander.

Ason Valley is an area of waterfalls, caves and little old villages. The salmon-rich Ason river is just 30 km long and ends in marshes at Santoña on the sea, famous for its anchovies.

Beaches are very natural and often deserted outside of August. Laredo’s endless strands are the best known, and Santander has its own beach, called El Sardinero.

Santander is the main town and point of reference. As well as being one of Spain’s most attractive coastal towns, it is the normal point of entry from abroad, whether by plane or ferry.
