Overview
The superbly and newly restored villa sits in a genuine, rural hamlet location within walking distance from a simple but good, welcoming bar-restaurant in a fairly remote location but within easy driving to many points of interest. It's an excellent choice for a family holiday, and the pretty valley has plenty to discover.
Inland from Vigo on the Galicia coast and not far from the border with northern Portugal, the valley's microclimate ensures warmer temperatures and a dryer climate than Galicia’s north. The views are marvellous, and the house built of light grey granite is very attractive.
One of the attractions of the villa is the heatable pool, a rare luxury in the north of Spain: it can reach 25⁰C, making the summer swimming season a bit longer. If you roll on the thermal pool cover when you retire for the night, warm swims can be possible before breakfast. That's not all: the pool and the patio have lighting for great night swims under the stars, and a new environmentally friendly anti-bacterial filter system means there is no need for chlorine and no sore eyes after swims.
There is space on the poolside for sunbathing and just up a few steps, a dining terrace with views and nighttime illumination where you can enjoy al fresco meals. It connects directly to the kitchen, which we found very convenient.
One of the first things we noticed when we walked in was the fresh scent of pine from the extensive woodwork: very pleasant!
A spacious country kitchen provides a cheerful focal point for the house with plenty of natural light from windows and skylights in a vaulted pine ceiling, into which halogen lights are neatly recessed. It's a smart kitchen with a stainless steel double oven, hob, large fridge-freezer, and long wooden dining table.
The kitchen connects to a pleasant, comfy lounge with a log fire for winter nights. It gets plenty of natural light coming through the French windows that go out to a balcony with views.
A further bright sitting room has preserved overlapping stone slabs once used to dry root vegetables and fruit. It has a fabulous picture window with beautiful views across the valley and steps down to the patio outside. Many would agree the layout is very convenient, and it's even amusing how all ways seem to lead to Rome in this house.
The house has two double and two twin bedrooms, all en suite and with shuttered and double-glazed windows. One of the twin bedrooms has a socio-historic feature: a small stone ledge by the window initially intended as a seat where women would gaze out while sewing –you can see it was even purposefully positioned for right-handed needle movement– enjoying a wonderful view of the valley.
We felt the facilities at this villa were more than reasonably good but perhaps –and owing to some sitting or living spaces– best suited for six guests, even if sleeping arrangements are in place for up to eight guests in the four rooms.
If you are travelling with kids, there is a games room with a pool table, a full-sized table, tennis and darts, board games, shelves with books and music, and film DVDs.
The valley and surrounding natural areas have so much to offer, from walks to fantastic river beaches, picnic and barbecue spots, and some good restaurants and bars for sampling the delights of traditional Galician food.
Your stay will be characterized by all manner of delicious culinary options in the area: you’re in Galicia now! There is a local gastronomic fair at a local town every Saturday –and in Galicia, food is a high point of any holiday stay– and twice a month, a cheese fair in Cañiza, where you will also find municipal tennis courts and an indoor pool. If you want to try fairground octopus, cooked with art to tasty tenderness– it’s considered a profession– we'll tell you where and when to try it.

This is a charming house with many fine details. It was a pleasure to stay there for 3 weeks. There is a lot of space, fine terraces, an excellent swimming pool (we swam till Oct 3rd). The sorrounding is quiet and very beautiful. The caretaker was very helpful. The communication with the owners very good. On our list to visit it again."

+ Read moreGreat communication from Rustical Travel - plenty of advice and information on the property and local area which was really helpful. The villa was amazing; the pictures don't do it justice! Spacious and comfortable - everything you could need is there. The pool was a huge hit and we loved being able to eat indoors/outdoors and cook in if we wanted. Such a special place - thank you!"
+ Read moreThe house is lovely, in an excellent position with superb views - just watching the sun creeping towards us across the valley out of the shadow of the hills behind the house was a daily delight at breakfast. Regrettably we do not speak Spanish, to our shame: but with many laughs and gesticulation, we made good friends with our neighbours. We quickly learned the routine of catching the bread van by hanging a bag on the gatepost. Visitors need to know that the little bar and restaurant across the valley is quite superb and the walk down into the valley and up again (in both directions) is the only way of matching the very generous helpings. We were very happy with the arrival support and instructions from Rustical, and their prompt replies to any queries before our holiday. There were brief problems with water supply (that from the house's own well pump seems more reliable than the water main supply) swiflty dealt with by Jose. Shopping in A Caniza, barely 15 minutes away, offered excellent choices, and was no price to pay for the glorious isolation of the house."
+ Read moreLovely house with great swimming pool, outdoor space and beautiful views. The owners left loads of detailed information which helped us plan trips around the local area. We enjoyed river swims, exploring lovely old towns, driving around the coast and thermal baths in Ourense. Couldn’t fault it - thank you!"

+ Read moreGreat and easy communication prior to arrival. Met the key holder nearby and found her very friendly and helpful. The property was just as described on the website. Lovely peaceful location. Villa was very well equipped and had everything you would need. The small village nearby had a bar/restaurant. The owners were very welcoming and the food was very good and reasonably price. Location meant you were still able to tour the area including the coast. Ideal relaxing break helped by lovely weather. Would strongly recommend. Thanks"

Rustical Update
We have now updated our information regarding the tv channels, which can be very limited.
We have just returned from a fantastic 2 weeks in Galicia at AG21.I particularly wanted to comment toyou and the owners on the housekeeper, Oly.Not only didwas she polite and very helpful, keeping a spotless house and solving any small issues, but she alsowentabove and beyond. I stupidly left my work laptophidden at thehouse, and only remembered when in Northern France.A call to Oly and shesorted out a courierfor the laptop to the UK - and this arrivedalmost at the same point we did!She really has been great, and the owners should be aware of theexcellent job she does.Thank you.
+ Read moreQuite a lot better than the description and photos describe. For example, there's also a games room with a full size table tennis table. The neighbours are lovely and there's fresh food delivered directly to the door via local mini vans. The pool is perfect, especially as it's climate controlled, although it does sting the eyes after prolonged swimming under water. Such a lovely house with lovely walks around the hamlet... Drive carefully though!!"
Rustical Update
The pool has chlorine-free salt filter system, which as far as we are aware, is more gentle to the eyes than chlorine-treated water.
We spent a fantastic holiday in this splendid property ! Inside you have 4 big clean rooms with bath or shower, a kitchen with all facilities, a nice living room, a playing room with table tennis-pool-darts-a lot of books, even a 'quiet' room to get some rest ! Outside you have 2 (!) patios, a very nice heated swimming pool and a great view. Also nice : bread can be delivered every day, vegetables+fish 2 times a week. Housekeeper Olly and neighbour Alelina are very friendly, we felt at home ! There were few channels on the satellite-TV, that was the only disadvantage but maybe we didn't search enough. Overall, this property gets a big 11 out of 10, if we'd visit Galicia again we'd surely book this villa !!!"
+ Read moreWe have stayed at this lovely Casa twice now. Once in December when the weather was fantastic, warm sun, fresh air, bright blue skies, excellent for mountain biking and walking in the surrounding hills, as well as sitting on the terrace sipping the lovely local wine and admiring the views. Our 6 year old daughter was very impressed with the Wolf Trap, but disappointed at the lack of any wolves! The second time was over Easter when the weather was wet, but we made use of the log fire in the lounge. The house is spacious with an enormous dining table in the kitchen, great for communal meals and the bedrooms are large, comfortable with en-suites. The local bar is friendly and does basic meals and the surrounding area wonderful for wine bodegas. We would thoroughly recommend this house. Bruce, Jan and Bessie."
+ Read moreWe loved Galicia (the food, the wine, the vistas, the lack of other Brits) and we liked the Villa (the vista, the facilities) very much. Our only criticism of the villa would be with the beds and bedding - all would benefit from being of higher quality. We think also the relative remoteness of this property -while in some ways part of its appeal - could be a drawback for some and should be flagged more effectively in the description. We would not have been entirely happy to have a 2 week holiday based on the attractions in the immediate vicinity. We were however happy to use it as a base to explore the region - and did over 2000 kms in our hire cars. All in all very good, and happy with the service/communication with Rustical."
Rustical Update
Excellent news: On April 2016 some of the beds and mattresses were replaced. In general all rooms are now offering higher standards.
We want to give Rustical Travel as organization the highest possible marks on all aspects: A great place, very quiet, spacious, nicely decorated, beautiful views, great pool (even though we could not use it for more than a day, because something was wrong with the chemicals) and well placed terraces (with great deck chairs / beds), very professionally equipped kitchen (including espresso machine !), ok beds, plenty of towels and bed linen, good information (in English !) on restaurants etc. & use of equipment in the house, and pleasant caretaker (Aurelio was very helpful). In short: we felt really at home here! "
+ Read moreWe had a wonderful time at this villa, so peaceful. We enjoyed being able to take early morning walks (and runs) in the quiet roads around the villa. There are lots of notes at the villa with recommendations on places to go, eat and shop - we endorse it all. The riverside at Maceira is beautiful, especially when it all gets too hot at the villa poolside."
