Overview

If you want comfort and privacy in a tranquil country setting within comfortable reach of the highlights of northern Catalonia, look no further.

Your four-bedroom villa is set in quiet countryside, just 100 metres from a well-preserved old village. It comprises the lion's share of an impressive dwelling with an upstairs apartment belonging to the same owner that is left strictly unoccupied whenever holidaymakers are here, thus guaranteeing your total privacy in the house and gardens.

In 2023 we were informed that the village has a good restaurant/cafe. There's also a good restaurant 4 minutes' drive away, in a small village with a bar, bakery and butcher's.

The villa is pleasantly informal, furnished in an eclectic style by the artist owner and hung with a mixed assortment of pictures.

We especially liked the spacious and imaginatively decorated open-plan main room and how it communicates naturally with the lawned gardens.

The house scores high on facilities. The four bedrooms are comfortable and attractive.

A stepped, mosaic swimming pool allows for delicious cooling-off and enjoyment during summer months and there are sunloungers by the pool and in the gardens. The pool's nocturnal illumination is automatic.

The house is an excellent choice all year round, with central heating as well as an open fireplace (logs included in the rental).

This is one of the most rewarding locations in Spain, and excursion options from the property make for a thoroughly complete holiday. You can choose from cultural visits to villages and towns, including Dali’s castle museum in the town where he was born and died; natural wonders such as the amazing volcanoes of La Garrotxa; boating, swimming and walks at Banyoles Lake, and good beaches on the Costa Brava.

Distances to places of interest are usually an item we list under the Location tab, but in this case, they bear underlining as they are so conveniently situated.

Here are some of the highlights:

Mare de Deu del Mont at Cabanelles is a magical mountain from whose summit you can virtually see the entire province of Girona. It is surmounted by a sanctuary, destination of local pilgrimages in March and April from nearby villages such as Crespià, Beuda, Besalú, Cabanelles: 10 minutes.

Dali's Castle Museum, where the inimitable artist is also buried, in his home village of Figueres on the verge of the Pyrenees: 15 minutes.

Banyoles Lake, from where water is channelled through the town of the same name, watering the market gardens of Sant Esteve monastery: 15 minutes.

Besalú, an atmospheric medieval town on the banks of the River Fluvià: 20 minutes.

In Sant Miquel de Campmajor, Bosc Can Ginebreda is another enchanted wood, this time thanks to the free-standing sculptures by artist Xicu Cabanyes. Xicu has his studio right in the woods, and you’ll also find an exciting restaurant there, 30 minutes away.

Handsome Girona cathedral town, with its ancient Jewish quarter (and international airport): 35 minutes

Beaches of the Costa Brava and well-preserved ruins of the Greek town of Ampurias (Empúries): just over 30 minutes.

At Santa Pau, the marvel of the Garrotxa volcanic zone, where you can get right to the craters of the (extinguished) volcanoes. Or go horseriding in the unique beechwoods of the Faigeda d'en Jordà, whose autumn leaf fall is an event in itself: 45 minutes.

YOUR REVIEWS

Jenny | September | 2024

Overall we enjoyed our stay in this rustic villa. The villa is a good size with comfortable bedrooms and bonus of ensuites. The kitchen was fairly well equipped but we did have to wash a lot of the cutlery etc before using even though there was a dishwasher. It was a shame that part of the villa is closed off, most notably the upstairs room with veranda which means there was no access to the outside space from the first floor. The pool is a good size but a few missing tiles. To our knowledge this was not cleaned during the week we stayed. Rustical Travel communicate well and this is the second time we have booked with them. I would book with them again but I think it needs to be mentioned that a large part of this property is closed off which isn’t a problem as plenty spacious but it is the part you would want to access to for the views."

Rustical Update

In October 2024 we reviewed this property page and although we can read this in the first paragraph of the overview: -It comprises the lion's share of an impressive dwelling with an upstairs apartment belonging to the same owner that is left strictly unoccupied whenever holidaymakers are here, thus guaranteeing your total privacy in the house and gardens.-, it has also now beeded added to the notes on the layout of the house:

-There is an upstairs apartment with a terrace belonging to the same owner that is left strictly unoccupied whenever guests are here.-

Our villa specialist, who personally knows this property, also confirmed that there are some photos of the views on the property page, which are lovely even if they are not seen from the higher terrace, which belongs to the closed upstairs apartment.

The owners also confirmed that they glue little tiles from the pool when they come off.

We particularly enjoyed the garden and dining terrace and spent most of our time outside whilst at the house. The kitchen is well-equipped. The views over Crespia below were beautiful. It is a rurally-located property but the cafe/restaurant in Crespia is in walking distance and sells breakfast bread and croissants, useful as there is no local shop."

the location is fantastic, the view, the swimming pool, the area, the new shower downstairs was great. Lots of trees and enough shade. I think the house could improve a bit if the kitchen gets an upgrade (was a bit smelly) and the other bathrooms too."

Apart from the hair-raising drive and the lack of toilet on the ground floor, the house was ideal, with spacious and agreeable accommodation, as well as a large garden for relaxing and swimming. There was an unforgettable view of the eastern Pyrenees."

Excellent large house for a big family group. Comfortable, attractive. Beautiful views from the house and garden over village and nearby mountains. 3 minor improvements would be :addition of bbq tools;sharper kitchen knives; better high chair. The high chair supplied was nor suitable for a baby - it had no means of securing child in the chair . This does need to be changed. Owners were delightful and friendly and were happy for us to stay most of Friday while they cleaned house for next visitors."

Rustical Update

Property manager confirmed that high chair is standard size. The other points should be improved for 2016, including barbecue tools.

It was a great quiet villa good for groups. The large shaded terrace was ideal and the massive lounge meant that all three couples could spend time together as a group. The kitchen was well equipped and the property was generally well looked after. It was easy to find coming from both France or Barcelona and an a great base to explore the region. The owners were extremely friendly and very helpful."
