Overview

The impression one has on entering the reception hall is more of a castle than a millhouse: the huge space, the vaulted ceiling and stone walls. "Is this all for us?" you might be tempted to wonder.

It’s surprising how quickly you can get used to the grand old Spanish style and make yourselves at home here. For families or a group of friends or colleagues, it has oceans of room and all the conveniences one expects and requires of a self catering holiday home.

There’s a magnificent swimming pool and large paved terraces for dining or sunbathing.

The proprietors live in a separate part of the extensive property, with its own entrance to one side. The lion’s share of the accommodation, the front gardens, terraces and the pool, are all for the exclusive use of guests, whose privacy is respected to the utmost. It’s also a small homestead with chickens, horses and lazy dogs which you’re welcome to visit (and fresh eggs are often available).

The area is very pretty: this is La Garrotxa in picturesque Girona with some of the most delightful walks in Spain through a region of extinguished volcanoes. You can go horseriding, cycling, paragliding, play golf, go rowing in the lake at Banyoles, but is the walks that most people find so rewarding. The options are innumerable but the new signposted network of trails through La Garrotxa Natural Park is enough on its own to satisfy hikers of all levels of fitness.

The millhouse was built in 1797. It’s stately yet comfortable, with six parquet-floored bedrooms sleeping twelve people. The predominant style is rustic Provençal. complemented by modern facilities.

A flight of stairs goes up from the imposing entrance hall to the first floor, which is where most of the accommodation is distributed. A very large main room with a long, formal dining table and informal living area opens to a balcony looking out at the countryside over terraces, swimming pool and the wooded slopes alongside them.

Stairs lead to a cosier living area, a gallery overlooking the main room whose beamed ceiling curves down to the floor. It’s a good place to hide away with a book or write emails, or for children to play.

Beds have quality mattresses and are super-comfortable.

One bedroom is situated by the doorway to the main room, the other five bedrooms lead off a corridor on the same floor. Two of the double-bedded rooms have en suite bathrooms. The other double and the three twin-bedded rooms share a bathroom.

The kitchen is alongside the lounge and dining area. It is fully equipped to cater a full party of one dozen. It has also has access to the balcony at the front of the house.

The outdoor terrace and pool areas are private and not overlooked by the owner’s accommodation. The pool is smashing, twelves metres by six and chlorine-free. There is plenty of terrace space to lie in the sun, as well as a brick-built barbecue and a shaded dining area by the pool. If natural river dips appeal, the nearby River Llemena has safe bathing spots.

To the rear of the house are the owners' gardens, which you are welcome to explore and enjoy, simply bearing in mind that they are a shared part of the property. The old feeding pool for the mill is here.

There is an excellent restaurant less than five minutes away and the local area has other, also very good, country restaurants. The house is on the edge of the village of Sant Esteve and there are two further bar/restaurants which we didn’t try. In Planes d’Hostoles (15 minutes drive), you’ll find first class butchers and bakers. As our Catalonia Guide indicates, this is Spain at its most sophisticated. Where other southern Spain locations may have supermarkets, Catalonia is likely to have delicatessens.

The Vall d'en Bas and its villages are wonderfully charming, don't miss nearby mediaeval Besalu. The capital of the region, Olot, has pleny of museums, history, and beautiful architecture. Santa Pau and Castellfollit offer striking volcano sights.

And for those who find the sea irresistible, there are the great satisfactions of seeking out secluded beaches and some extraordinary views along the coastline. It takes an hour to reach here. Drive the same distance north and you’re in the Pyrenees.

Lindsay | July | 2023

We had a wonderful stay at Villa CA21. There were seven of us, including three young children. The villa is massive and at first I felt it was a bit dark, but actually this kept it relatively cool compared to the outside temperature. It is well equipped - the only minor suggestion I would make is that some unbreakable plastic beakers/glasses would be good, especially with small children. Nuria, the hostess, is a lovely lady and could not have been more helpful. It was a shame that both the restaurants in the village were closed but she helped us book restaurants further afield. All in all I would highly recommend this villa and I would love to go back."

Wonderful property. Such a great, kind and attentive owner. Great, clear travel instructions on how to get to villa. This is very important, so good to see care was taken in explaining this. All around a completely positive expirience. Thank you."

The villa was traditional Spanish style. Even though it was hot we were ok without air conditioning. The local shop was good and we had a good meal at the local bar/restaurant. The children loved the different areas of the villa and grounds and some of the adults enjoyed running in the area. The main drawback was that it took around an hour to get anywhere."

We had an absolutely lovely stay at El Moli. The villa is beautiful, spacious and we had a ball. We were a party of 6 adults, 6 children and an infant and there was room for all. The pool area was divine and really safe for kids. There was also a trampoline which next door allowed us to use and a table tennis table and loads of toys. One thing to note is that all of the living space is up a big flight up stone stairs so getting luggage, groceries or just a beer involves going upstairs. We thought a fridge down in the foyer, tucked away somewhere, would be a nice touch. There is wifi and a little shop which surprisingly has a good selection despite being pretty small and having odd hours. The closest big grocery store is back in Girona (about 50 min) so bear this in mind. The owners are next door but they are very mindful of people in the villa and they were only to happy to help when we needed something. They even left us eggs from their chickens! Our only slight bug bear was check in time is not until 5pm (and you need to be out by 10am) so if are arrive at lunch time (as we did), it's a lot of time to kill when all the kids want to do is swim! Also, there is no A/C in the villa which made for some pretty sticky nights - maybe some fans would be a good idea.Other than that 10/10."

We had a wonderful time at Mas CA21 villa in St Esteve De Llemena. The host Nuria was lovely, and we felt very welcomed. The villa is quite remote, so stock up with groceries in Girona before heading to the villa, although the small Superanna supermarket in the town is quite well equipped for the essentials. We felt we had adequate information from Rustical Travel, and any questions were quickly answered. The villa was well equipped with crockery and cutlery and extra bedding, and the only negative was probably that the double beds were quite hard and maybe the mattresses need replacing before too long. The pool needs a few repairs too. We didn't understand prior to arriving that the owners were actually living in the same villa, but it didn't bother us. We knew they were on the same property, but thought they would be in a separate building. The directions to the villa were fantastic. We loved loved loved it, and thank Rustical Travel and Nuria for making it a magical experience for us!! Would definitely book through Rustical Travel again should we ever be lucky enough to have another holiday in Europe like this! Many thanks, Justine"

Rustical Update

The property manager informed us that they will look into the mattresses. Also, they did repair a couple of lightbulbs in the pool area that were loose.

We really loved our holiday here. The proprietor was really helpful and the villa exactly as described. And Rustical Travel couldn't have been more helpful either. We liked the local village, although it is definitely not picturesque, and we loved trips to the sea and to nearby towns. We also enjoyed outside dining, the animals and play area, and the delightful selection of toddler toys. One thing - there is a real tourist trap. A trip to a local gorge is recommended where there is wild swimming. We drove there, could not find a space in the small parking area, so followed the example of other cars which were parking on a verge up the road. When we returned we found a hundred euro fine on each of our two cars. When we went to the town hall to argue our case we were told that morning and afternoon the traffic warden patrols the road and slaps tickets on all the cars parked unawares. There is no notice, except in the car park, telling visitors they may not park on the verges. As a matter of fact the official at the town hall listened to our argument and had our tickets destroyed, but it was a very unpleasant and potentially costly incident and visitors to the villa need to be given a clear warning NOT to park on the verges!!!!!"

We had a great holiday in CA21. It is huge, and there was plenty of room for our 3-generational family group. The swimming pool, kept very clean, is a strong feature especially in hot weather. Its hard to think of anything to criticise. A few hints about the locality. St Esteve de Llemena is a small very quiet village in a valley flanked by steep wooded hills. There is little through traffic, so is popular with cyclists others enjoying the outdoors. There are way marked paths radiating out from the village up into the hills, so it is great for walking, but boots poles are recommended. The village store, Anna’s, stocks nearly everything you would need for the holiday. It has a big range of foods drinks, freshly baked bread in the morning, cold meat cheese, but no fresh meat or fish. Also all the usual household requirements. There are two restaurants in the village, which have received favourable reviews. We only tried one, El Cabrit and agree with the reviews. The lunchtime “menu del dia” at €12 gets you three courses (and a choice for each one) plus wine, water, bread coffee, so is tremendous value. For €22 you get more choices larger portions. The area is proud of its Catalonian heritage. It does not see many non-Spanish visitors, and English is not widely spoken. Catalan is the principal language and is used on all the menus noticeboards. A Catalan phrase book is useful."

All in all we had a fantastic time with plenty of space for us all, only comment criticism is the fridge, it's old and it didn't seal properly so keeping anything cold enough over the week was difficult, we had shop daily as meat was going off in the heat. Nuria was lovely very helpful"

The property manager has confirmed that a new large fridge and an extra freezer have been put in the kitchen.

Overall an excellent place for a family holiday . Our only criticism is that the the fridge and the freezer are only large enough for a small family . If 10 people stay there needs to be an adaquately sized Fridge ."

We had a lovely holiday in CA 21. It is a great house for a large party with plenty of room for 12 people with everyone getting a nice bedroom . It is well equipped and the pool is fantastic , you should highlight the table tennis table ! . It was good that the photos matched the reality . Nuria was kind and helpful as were the people in the village . I would highlight two issues. There are no insect guards on the windows , it was difficult to have the windows open which meant sleeping at night was difficult. This would be cheap and easy to address and significantly improve the experience of the house. Secondly, for a luxury house , the bed linen and towels need renewing/ replacing with lots of white fluffy towels and high quality white cotton bed linen. You can ask people to bring pool towels or use the current house towels. We really enjoyed our two weeks and would recommend the house to others . Thank you Rustical Travel, you linked us up to a lovely house again"

Rustical Update

Bed linen and towels were replaced in January 2016.

The property was exactly as described whic isn't always the case. Spotlessly clean ..bed linen could possibly have been of a higher standard/ natural fabrics. Very friendly and most obliging hosts. We were invited into their home for football match watching and shared friends and food. Very kind and thoughtful, nothing was too much trouble. Place quiet and relaxing, local pub / cafe Vall was really friendly and the food and wine an absolute joy and amazing value. We had many good meals here and the fact that that we could walk to it was most important. Our hostess also supplied meals and these were generous and of high standard. Garden very interesting and serene and accessible for strolling ..lovely space. The house ,pool, garden and lovely friendly generous hosts more than lived up to expectations. Regards , Antoinette"

This was perfect for our holiday. We were group of 8 Motorcyclists. We had good parking for the bikes, the accommodation was just right for our needs. The owners were around enough to assist but not at all intrusive, and made us feel very at home. We had provisions already purchased for our arrival. We had a beautiful evening meal cooked for us in the wonderful dining area of the main house. The Bar/Restaurant in the village 10mins walk away, really looked after us, and we had fabulous food at very reasonable prices. The locals were very friendly and accommodating of such a large group. The swimming pool was put to good use, if a little cold due to some unlucky weather we had. The area is rural, and provided some nice walks. Girona took no time to get there really, and the location was just right for all our ride outs, especially the MotoGP at Circuit De Catalunya about an hour and half away. Loved our holiday, and the people we met. A good choice."
