Overview

A wooden door opens to the scent of rosemary and a hint of lavender and honeysuckle. Up the garden steps and all of a sudden, you feel you’re on top of the world.

You’re standing on a perfectly private terrace above a sleepy, whitewashed Andalusian village and the views of the Grazalema Mountains are fantastic. Behind you there is just the pine-forested hillside.

Next to you is a small but sexy infinity pool with the same views.

The main surprise comes when you open the front door: the interior of the villa, sculpted into the rock of the hill, is an immense space. It's clean and white, set off by colourful rugs and paintings.

It's all brightly illuminated by sunlight from the huge windows, draped in white curtains and somehow the furnishings seem dwarfed by the size of the room, which opens up and extends further in like a white cavern, decorated with the colours of ethnic art and artefacts.

It’s smart and ethereal at the same time, a smooth white floor reflecting natural light from an overhead skylight, which is semi-covered in summer to gently filter the Andalucia sun.

As you move further in, you come to a side room provided with a desk and iMac computer.

Opposite is an impressive rock feature from which plants grow here and there, quite at home in their interior garden.

French windows open to the terrace which is a marvellous, shaded place, set with with comfortable armchairs and a table to eat al fresco with mountain views of Grazalema.

Walkers may already be familiar with Grazalema Natural Park: it's great limestone rambling country with caves to explore and only a short drive away. Another Natural Park, the Sierra de las Nieves, doubles the interest for walkers. As for walking guides you couldn't be in a better place: the villa owner is the author of the very best local walking guide book and this, along with a wealth of additional information and maps, is provided here for your use.

The infinity swimming pool by the terrace is maintained year-round at this very warm, south-facing Ronda location, but not heated, so we would recommend swims no earlier than May or later than October. Having said which, when we were there in late October, the weather was still very warm.

Returning inside, the main room ends in a spacious kitchen with all mod cons and a dining area. A black slate floor here contrasts effectively with the airy white elsewhere.

Although this is a perfect hideaway for a couple, there are two double bedrooms, and plenty enough space and comfort for four people. Simply bear in mind that the Master bedroom is distinctly superior to the other, perfectly nice double room.

The Master bedroom is down some stairs from the main room and has a deep red backcloth depicting a Moroccan wedding. The mattress and linen are what you would expect of luxury accommodation and the window is set deliberately low so that you have a view of the Sierra de Grazalema from the bed itself. There’s netting on the window to deter any stray insect from disturbing you.

The rock garden feature is continued in the bedroom and even more so and to greater effect in the bathroom directly opposite. A large round tub is sunk into a massive rock in such a way as to give the impression of a hot tub in a natural mountain setting. It’s a big tub, designed for two to share, by candlelight perhaps.

The second bedroom is two floors away, reached up wooden steps from the living room. It enjoys the same fine view and can be made up double-bedded or twin-bedded to suit. Because of the distance from the Master bedroom and the nature of the steps, it is appropriate for older children or another couple.

There are plenty of opportunities for eating out both in Montecorto and nearby villages and we’ll send you our recommendations in a local guide as one of your holiday documents.

Ronda, one of Andalucia’s star cities, is just 20 minutes up the road. A stay here wouldn't be complete without seeing the gorge, the old bullring and other sights.

Seville, Jerez, Cadiz and Marbella are other intriguing day trip options.

Local activities run from horseriding and mountain biking to paragliding and canoeing in the nearby lake.

The Virgen del Carmen local fiestas in Montecorto normally take place around the 16th of July; if you stay at the property during those dates you will be able to enjoy plenty of events, music, dance and shows in the village, especially on Friday and Saturday.

Winter bookings are definitely suitable here and the house is well-heated, with air conditioning units switching to warm air blowers. There are also radiators, and a wood-burning stove in the living room.

Gillian | September | 2024

A lovely setting right at the top of the village under the pine woods with spectacular views. This is an unusual property which has been designed around the hillside, incorporating the limestone cliffs; really nicely done. The house itself is airy and bright; the balcony and plunge pool nice relaxing spaces to spend time. Once unloaded, we chose to park our car in the small village car park below the house (it is visible from the kitchen) rather than along the road near the property. The local support for the property was exemplary; could not have asked for a more helpful caretaker. This was our first booking with Rustical; everything was really well handled, very friendly, efficient and informative right from the start. Would definitely choose to arrange future trips with the company."

We absolutely loved the house and the views. The only criticism we had was that the upstairs bedroom was too hot and could do with a mesh over the window and shutters. As always with Rustical Travel, the housekeeper was excellent and the house notes were very good, but they are a little out of date (the owner has since died and he/his email address is referenced in them). We would love to return."

Colin | July | 2024

Great place, really well equipped. Easy to find with good instructions. Host lovely and very helpful. Only complaint would be we found there was no barbeque available to be used, even though the listing said there was one. Buying charcoal etc prior to arrival proved to be a waste of money."

Rustical Update

In September 2024, the local manager confirmed that an electric hot griddle is now provided for outdoor cooking, as the use of charcoal or wood barbecues is prohibited due to local fire safety regulations.

The house was lovely to stay in: interesting, stylish, really comfortable and everything worked well.It was very clean and we liked Paqui coming in every weekday to tidy. Howeve one reason we had chosen the house was to be in a village and be able to eat out in the evening and we expected to use the service of tapas cooked by Paqui sometimes too.So we shopped en route at Ronda as recommended with that in mind .We saw Paqui on the Monday and she explained there were no order forms because, quite understandably, she had no time to cook as she was looking after her mother who was ill. There was nowhere to eat out at night. We often stay out of a village and didn't mind that much but would have liked to known in advance to shop with that in mind .The main shop, Rubio's, had good cheese, some wine and fruit and veg. There was no visitors' book in the property and that can be useful in giving up to date info. There were a few wee discrepancies between the notes emailed to us (which we'd printed and brought)and the paper copy at the house. Guy had had some email difficulties when travelling which didn't matter much but I liked previous bookings where I dealt directly with Rustical Travel. Wonderful house, hammocks we had known about in advance provided welcome shade for fairskinned Scots, and we had a very pleasant time."

This property was lovely - a beautiful setting at the top of the village of Montecorto giving gorgeous views from the terrace across the surrounding countryside. We wanted somewhere to relax and this was the ideal spot. The villa had all that we needed and was very comfortable. Guy, the owner was extremely helpful and responded promptly to queries. This is the third time we have booked a villa through Rustical Travel and we would definitely use the company again. If you want a relaxing break away from the crowds, then we would recommend both this villa and Rustical Travel."

The house is as beautiful as the pictures suggest, with fantastic views over the village and valley. A real treat is the extensive library of books to sit and read, with occasional dips in the pool."

Graham | October | 2021

We found the property very relaxing and comfortable. Although it gave the feeling of being away from it all, it was only a 20 minute drive to Ronda, where you could access large supermarkets for your everyday needs. We wanted a property that had a view, and this place certainly didn't disappoint. The only criticism we had, would be the quality of bed pillows, which we found to be too soft. But that could easily be rectified."

We had a fabulous 2 weeks in July although it was very, very hot! The property was great with everything we needed. It was spotlessly clean and kept that way by Pacqui who came in every day. It was exactly as described and we were very impressed by the detail in the information of how to get there and how to work everything. There was also good information about eating places and where to visit. We honestly could not fault it. Pool was lovely to cool off in and the terrace a nice place to sit with beautiful views. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it!"
