Overview

Peaceful little Bubion, set midway up the Poqueira Gorge, is quieter still in the oldest, lower quarter where the 15th century church and square are to be found. Here, where the road ends and becomes a footpath down to neighbouring Pampaneira village, is this simple, pleasant home for two people.

The old, traditional, well-kept house is nicely hidden away around a corner where it faces south and west down the steep, wide Poqueira gorge and across the mountain range to the distant Mediterranean Sea. Unpretentious yet comfortable, it represents good value and provides a perfect base for  exploring La Alpujarra.

An open-plan downstairs area combines living, dining and cooking with an open fireplace by which you can sit in comfort and soak up the atmosphere of the ancient Moorish district. A child can be accommodated on a sofa bed here and the shower room/WC is also on this floor.

A wooden staircase rises to an open gallery overlooking the living room, where a double bed is set alongside a small sitting area, and a balcony offers stunning views not only of the mountains but down the deep valley, too. Sunsets occasionally permit glimpses of the Rif Mountains in Morocco.

Bubion is a well-preserved village, one of the better known of all the pretty white villages in La Alpujarra. Its shops and bars are mostly at the top of the village, through which the mountain road passes on its way up to Capileira and the Sierra Nevada National Park. The village is popular with those seeking peace and quiet and has great options for hiking, horseriding, as well as visits to Granada and the Alhambra, or the Mediterranean coast.

If you prefer not to hire a car, it's possible to get here by bus from Granada, although note that the bus service is limited and it means that your have to walk down to the bottom of the village with your bags.

Location

Setting

Historical mountain village in spectacular gorge. Las Alpujarras region (southern slopes of Sierra Nevada).

Location

In the lower quarters of Bubion, by the edge of the village, in a street with no traffic, near the main square and church. We recommend renting an ordinary car rather than a large one to drive through the village. Parking adjacent to the cottage (a traffic-free street) is impossible, but there may be free parking in the nearby square. Avoid driving through the lower part of the village if you are not confident.

The house is absolutely WONDERFUL...so cosy, so quaint, and with breathtaking views. We loved every minute of our stay and wish we could have stayed longer. The streets are narrow steep, they definitely get your heart rate going. Peaceful, quiet, relaxing....perfect. The team at Rustical Travel are fantastic...the directions they gave us to get from Malaga to Bubion were spot on, so easy to follow and made things so much easier for us. A BIG THANKYOU to you all!!."

Alena | August | 2017

A lovely little property with all amenities if you are looking to step into another world and era and get away from the usual rush and bustle. At the edge of the village down a slight slope it has its own calm, with the main sounds being the church bells reassuringly striking time, the trickling of water and above all the glorious whoosh of gully winds. The view from the balcony invites further exploration. Shops are nearby, as are numerous bars and restaurants. The owner was sensational."

Quaint little house, very rustic and perfect for a couple who enjoy walking. This is our second visit here. The cottage is situated right at the bottom of the village and has great views over the gorge. It is not luxurious, but had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. Parking nearby is difficult and it is quite a steep climb up the narrow streets to the car park on the main road, this would be a problem for people with mobility difficulties. Bubion is a lovely, peaceful village. The local people are very friendly, especially in El Teide restaurant, which I would recommend to anyone - their food and tapas are amazing and very reasonably priced. We loved our stay in AP21 and will definitely return in the future, it is great value for money and would suit people who would appreciate a simple holiday in the mountains."

The property was as advertised and had everything we needed. The views from the little balcony were superb and it was the perfect place to sit with a cerveza and watch the sun go down. We would recommend Rustical Travel and would use them again."
